Don’t Fall Into a Fashion Rut This Holiday Season!

December 12, 2013 By Monique Frausto 4 Comments

Let’s get real for a second. It’s super easy to fall into a fashion rut. It happens to me all of the time. In fact, it happens to a lot of us—all of the time. It doesn’t matter who you are, sometimes we have moments where we’re just not happy with what we’re wearing. We feel like all of our outfits look the same and that makes us feel…blah!

fashion tips by Monique

Yes, “blah” is a fashion term. Well, it is now. Believe me, I’ve been there myself tons of times. And there are a few things I’ve learned when I get there. First of all, I dress according to how I feel on the inside. If I’m happy, sad, mad, or stressed out, it’s reflected in my outfit.

I’m OK with the happy part, but the other emotions are the ones that usually send me in that fashion rut we’re talking about. So, when that happens I make sure to purposely use the following ways to “spruce up” my look. And just to make it clear, I don’t do this for anyone else, but my myself. I dress for me and my comfort level. That’s how it should be. You come first!

4 Tips for Getting out of a Fashion Rut

Add a Pop of Color

Sometimes I’ll get in a habit of only wearing dark colors like black, gray, or navy. If that’s your style, that’s OK! I love those colors. But, if you feel like you want to liven things up a bit, add a pop of color like red, orange, fuchsia, or even purple. You can easily do it with a shoe, necklace, belt, or a handbag. Don’t fear bright colors, even just a little bit like a ring or a bracelet can awaken an outfit.

Add an Accessory

This falls in-line with my first tip. Don’t be afraid to add an accessory (or two) to an outfit where you feel like something is missing. One of my favorite and quickest ways to do this is to add a scarf. I’m kind of obsessed with them. Whether it’s silk or linen during warmer weather or a cashmere scarf on chilly days—scarves can be worn tons of ways. Also, don’t be afraid to add a hat, belt, jewelry, or a brooch to your look.

Try a Bold Print

There’s no better way to awaken the fashion senses than with a bold print. Try the always popular animal prints like leopard, cheetah, zebra, or snakeskin. Wear a printed tank top under your favorite fitted black blazer. Or try a pair of flats or pumps in any of your favorite animal prints. There are tons of options out there. Stripes and polka dots are also some of my favorites.

Shop Your Closet

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just wear the same things over and over. Especially when I don’t have time to shop or it’s not in my budget. That’s when I reach into the back of my closet. I end up finding something I haven’t worn in a really long time and just rework it. Yes, you can shop your own closet! You’ll be surprised what you find back there.

These are only a few of my favorite tips to get out of a fashion rut. Remember, to always dress for yourself and your comfort level. I can’t stress that enough. Fashion is about expressing who you are!

Monique – great advice! I do all of these, especially shop my closet and add an accessory, it cheers me right up. And speaking of BLAH, that’s how I’ve been lately, just chilling in my boyfriend cardigan, leggings and knee high boots — so I think it’s time for a clean out and change my look (and mood) from blah to hoorah!

I’m going to have to shop my closet and see if I can find anything as you ladies suggest!
