The minute we found out we were having a baby girl, we knew we had a big task ahead of us. Raising confident girls is no small feat. Raising confident, multicultural girls comes with an added layer of complexity. There’s so much to think about when raising girls and raising multicultural children! One of the things we wanted to be sure we did was foster our future girl’s self-esteem and surround her with positive images. This meant purposely looking for books and toys with imagery and characters that our girl could identify with. We soon found out though, it’s not so easy to find dolls for multicultural girls!
Our girl is now nearly 10 years old and the market for multicultural dolls has improved, but still needs work. She’s not really into dolls anymore, but she has younger cousins that still play with dolls and making sure our nieces have diverse dolls to play with is important to our family. We also have an almost-5-year-old boy that also needs to see positive images of girls in dolls and books, even if he himself doesn’t play with dolls. The My Life As Doll of the Year is a dog walker that comes with three dogs, a cute poncho, and accessories for playing. Priced at $39.44, the My Life As dog walker doll is available as either blonde, brunette, Hispanic, or African-American, and all feature long, straight hair. I love the fact that there are different skin tones and hair colors available for the Doll of the Year, however, I wish the differences went a little further than that, perhaps featuring curly hair or features that Hispanic or African-American girls could relate to. There are other My Life As dolls available, with some featuring curly hair or varying hair styles, so if you’re looking for that, you may want to check out the full selection of My Life As dolls on Walmart.com and in stores!
This 18″ poseable doll with eyes that close is a great option for little girls that love to play with dolls, especially young girls that still have years of doll playing ahead of them! The My Life As Doll of the Year would be a great holiday gift too!
