“Mommy, When are You Going to Die?” & Other Conversations with My Preschooler

November 12, 2015 By Melanie Edwards Leave a Comment

Life with a preschooler can be so much fun! Sure, there are moments of frustrations and you’re still dealing with temper tantrums, but as your baby grows, builds a vocabulary, and develops a personality, your days become infinitely more interesting. A favorite part of mine about having a preschooler in the home is the wonderful conversations that transpire. My baby boy is almost 5 years old and over the last year, he’s really grown into quite a charismatic little boy. He’s a funny guy. Which, I suppose shouldn’t shock me considering both my husband and I have a great sense of humor. Yet, sometimes my little man can really surprise me – whether he’s saying something humorous or thought provoking.

Conversations with My Preschooler

While this collection of conversations with my preschooler is but a glimpse into our daily life, I know they are treasures I’ll want to remember as he grows. I hope that in sharing them with you, they will bring a smile to your face. If you have a preschooler at home, I’m sure you’ll be able to relate and probably have your own anecdotes to share!

“Mommy, When are You Going to Die?” & Other Conversations with My Preschooler

On Strangers in His Room

Regarding our Three Kings’ Day traditions, Baby boy: “Why do we put the baskets next to our bed?”

I explained it’s tradition to leave grass for the Kings’ camels and similar to putting cookies and milk out for Santa.

Baby boy: “But…why next to our bed? I don’t want to see the camels next to my bed!”

On Chores

Baby boy: “Hey mommy, after you drop sissy and me off at school today, I know what your routine needs to be…you need to wash clothes!”

Me: “Huh? Why is that?”

Baby boy: “Because I need more socks for my drawer!”

Me: “Yeah? Well, we’ll make sure to all work on laundry together this weekend….so you can put socks in your drawer…yourself.”

On Girls and Fear

As we drew and colored together, Baby boy: “My haunted house is only for daddy and I….because you and sissy might get too scared. So, you guys can go to the fun haunted house, not the scary one!”

Me: “I think we can handle the scary one too.”

Baby boy: “No, but it has bats. And G (friend at school) said girls are scared of bats.”

Me: “Ahhhh. Well, don’t you worry. Your sissy and I are strong girls. We won’t get scared.”

On Santa

Sometime this past spring…

Baby boy: “I want a new game for my DS. I don’t have any Spider-Man games.”

Me: “Ok. Well, let’s come up with a list of things you can do to earn it.”

Baby boy: “Oh, let me make a list for Santa for Christmas!”

Me: “Do you want the game for Christmas or sooner if you work for it and earn it?”

Baby boy: “For Christmas. Because I don’t want you to waste money on a game buying it.”

Me: “And if Santa brings it, then we don’t spend money?”

Baby boy: “Yeah! It’ll be free!”

On Work-Life Balance

During dinner, we each share a rose (something good from your day) and a thorn (something not-so-good from your day).

One night:

Me: “My thorn today was that I didn’t get any work done.”

Before I could continue, baby boy interrupts, “That should be your rose!”

After much laughter around the dinner table –

Me: “Why should it be my rose?”

Baby boy: “Because! You shouldn’t do work. You should play!”

On Being Sick

Me: “I don’t like being sick.”

Baby boy: “Me either. What’s the point in getting sick, anyway?”

Me: “I wish I knew, buddy.”

On Death

Baby boy: “Mommy, when are you going to die?”

Small pause.

“Because…I’m going to miss you.” (Sad face.)

As I said, life with a preschooler is definitely interesting – and fun! Sometimes you have to take a step back and decipher what your child is truly saying. Like the time he asked about me dying. It was a shock to hear the question, but it completely made sense when you remember that preschoolers tend to be very literal. Keep that in mind and enjoy those conversations with your preschooler!

Has your preschooler said something funny (or cute, or interesting)? Please share your own conversations with your preschooler!
