A Taste of Home

May 22, 2009 By Melanie Edwards 100 Comments

If you haven’t heard, in a few days, we’re going on vacation to Puerto Rico.

Of course, we’ve planned several must-do activities and sightseeing. But, is it wrong that I’m planning visits to specific areas of the island just so I can grab up certain foods?

Foods that I’m Looking Forward to Eating in Puerto Rico

Bacalaitos

Alcapurrias

Relleno de Papa

Pastelillos

Quenepas

Chicharron y Pan Sobao

Coco Frio

Asopao

Naaaa….I didn’t think so either.

Now, go look up each food to see what it is if you don’t already know.

yum, se me hizo la boca agua! what you refer to as pastelillos, we used to call them empanadillas when I lived there (a good 20 yrs now, lol)… man I remember in high school that was my lunch! a pizza empanadilla (or 2) and a tall cold bottle of Malta India … enjoy your trip girl, can’t wait for the pics!

@Elsa, I’ve heard them called empanadillas too. Apparently they’re called different names depending on which side of the island you’re on. My parents are from Aguadilla so I always heard pastelillo at home. Rico either way!

The only ones I have not tried are the Quenepas. My wife has told me horror stories about people choking on them …..

    enjoy your trip

@Melanie (Modern Mami), yes straight out of the fridge to give the quenepas a good chill. Perfect on a hot afternoon! That and tamarindos!

@Tyler – Building Camelot, I don’t know where you live, but you might be able to find some food in the area. I know here in Florida, we can find pretty much all of the above. But, yea, it’s a little more special when you’re eating it in the actual place, huh?

I don’t know, man.. the relleno de papa looks AMAZING, and if the pastelillo is the same thing as a pastel like they have in Brazil, I’m completely jealous, mouth watering, dying for one right now. One with delicious meaty, cheesy gooey filling, and another chocolate and strawberry banana filled, with cinnamon sugar coating. Oh, deliciousness of the world. How I miss Brazil.

@Erica, I’m not familiar with those in Brazil. Our pastelillos (or empanadillas) come filled with various meats, or pizza filling, or cheese.
