Holiday Gift Idea: Homemade Gardening Gift for Kids

There are many toys you can give your children this holiday season, but sometimes a small, homemade gift can be extra special. If you have a child that enjoys the outdoors or gardening, then this cute gardening kit is perfect to get them started. By adding a small handwritten note or attaching a short poem, such as the free printable poem we have for you, your homemade gardening gift will be even more special. Using just a few supplies you can purchase at your local Walmart, you too can put together this simple holiday gift idea for kids.

Homemade Gardening Gift for Kids (Great Holiday Gift Idea!)

Materials Needed:

  • Small pot – I used a mini clay planter, but something like this mini garden planter would work too. ($4.99 at Walmart)
  • Pack of seeds
  • Ribbon
  • Poem or handwritten note – Use our free printable gardening holiday gift poem for kids! [PDF]
  • Small bag of potting soil (optional)
  • Hole puncher (optional)
  • Popsicle stick (optional)
  • Glue (optional)

Putting Your Gardening Gift Together

  1. Tie a festive ribbon around the pot, creating a bow.
  2. Arrange seed packet and potting soil (if including) into pot.
  3. Print out our free printable gardening gift poem (or create your own handwritten note/poem). I found printing it on card stock works better than copy paper.
  4. Using a hole puncher, make a hole in your poem and attach to ribbon. Alternatively, you can glue poem to a popsicle stick and add to the arrangement inside the pot.

It’s a simple gift, but with the personalized note and homemade touch, it really becomes a special gift for kids that have an interest in gardening or the outdoors. You could also add any other items you feel the child in your life would appreciate, such as small child-safe gardening tools or a pair of kids’ gardening gloves. With some thought and with items from the Walmart Gardening Center, you can really make this gift your own!
