Choosing bright colors will definitely add to your home’s curb appeal, but you can use any color you prefer, or try colors that coordinate with your current landscape. Plus, you’ll only need a few materials, and it’s easy enough for kids to help (with supervision). Check out how you can transform items you already own or a nice thrift-store find into a DIY garden planter with a simple coat of spray paint!

Easy DIY Summer Planter for Your Kids’ Garden
For this project, we used a white ceramic garden lantern with a glazed finish that could also be used as a planter. It was perfect for starting a small kids’ garden in our new yard! Thinking of how my daughter loves bold colors, I chose a nice bright pink for her, which would also add lots of color to our yard for the summer months. Here’s how to easily create your own DIY summer planter for a kids’ garden!
Materials Needed
- Container of your choice, that can be used as a garden planter
- Spray paint can—choose your favorite summer color! We used Rust-Oleum American Accents Ultra Cover 2x Spray Paint
- Newspaper or drop cloth
- Disposable gloves

How to Create a Bold Color Summer Planter for a Kids’ Garden!
- Wipe the lantern/planter clean to be sure there’s no dust or dirt on it.
- Lay out some newspaper or a drop cloth in your garage, patio, or a large ventilated area where you can spray paint.
- Spray paint your planter in a back-and-forth motion to evenly coat it with the new color, turning it as you spray, until the entire planter is covered. We suggest wearing gloves to avoid getting paint on your hands.
- Let it dry for about an hour (or more to be sure it’s completely dry) and enjoy it in your garden!
Isn’t that so easy? I was surprised by how well the color took, considering the ceramic had a glazed finish, but it really coated well with just one coat of paint! I did go back and touch up a few spots I missed on the first coat, but overall, the one coat of paint was sufficient.
I also considered using a clear gloss over the paint, but then decided I liked the matte look of the planter as it was and left it alone. You can do that extra step if you choose, depending on your taste and needs! And remember, this is also a lantern, so you could add a light inside and have a beautiful decorative piece for your walkway or yard!
