Festive 4th of July Decoration: DIY Fourth of July Pinwheels {Kids Craft}

June 27, 2018 By Lisa Renata 3 Comments

July 4th is just around the corner, which means fun 4th of July celebrations! Check out these festive DIY Fourth of July pinwheels you and the kids can make! Our amazingly creative contributor Lisa will show you how!

DIY Fourth of July Pinwheels {Kids Craft}

Grilling, soaking in the sun, kids running, laughing, eating…then later in the day, looking up high in the sky for breathtaking fireworks – those are the things I think of when someone says Fourth of July – that plus red, white, and blue. I thought it would be fun for the kids and I to make festive pinwheels for the 4th of July to decorate around the lawn. They kind of remind me of fireworks and are much easier to make than it seems. Just follow these simple steps!

DIY Fourth of July Pinwheels {Kids Craft}

Materials Needed:

  • assorted 8 1/2 x 11 card stock and/or craft paper in festive 4th of July colors
  • long, thin wooden dowels
  • assorted buttons in festive 4th of July colors
  • hot glue gun (and glue sticks) or craft glue

Materials Needed for DIY Fourth of July Pinwheels

How to make Fourth of July Pinwheels:

Begin by cutting off 2 1/2 inches from the length of the paper. This will leave you with a perfect 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch square. See photo below.

Next, draw a line from corner to corner creating an X. I drew mine with a sharpie pen so you could see it clearly, but I recommend you do it with a pencil, lightly marked. Once lines are marked, you will need to cut 4 1/2 inches directly on the line, starting from the corner towards the center. See photos below.

To fold and glue your pinwheel, follow the steps below. For this step, I prefer using a glue gun. Craft glue will also work, but it will take longer to dry. If you do use a glue gun, make sure your little one is supervised, we don’t want any burned fingers!

You’re almost done! To finish your Fourth of July pinwheel, you’ll need to glue the stick to the back. Yes, this means they’re stationary pinwheels – they’re not meant for spinning, only for decoration purposes. Finally, just to make sure that stick stays put, I like to reinforce it with a bit of pretty washi tape as seen below.

You’re done! Have a fun Fourth of July!
