My five year old will be starting Kindergarten this fall. She just completed pre-Kindergarten and since her preschool follows the same school calendar as the public schools, that means she has an actual summer off, just like all school-aged kids. This also means that she’ll be spending a lot of time at home and we need to figure out ways to keep her busy. She’s not the type of kid to sit still for too long, plus we don’t want her to waste away the summer and forget everything they did in pre-K this past year.

We’ve lined up a few activities for the summer that will help her keep busy, entertained, and should be fun. Here’s our plan.

5 Ways to Keep Kids Busy this Summer

1. Summer Reading Program

Our local library has a summer reading program for kids to keep up with their reading while out of school. They provide a reading list, a calendar for kids to mark off days they read, and a goody bag at the end of the program in exchange for a full calendar. Our library’s program is for ages 6-12, but I figure that since baby girl is reading well for her age, we can work on the books appropriate for 6 and 7 year olds. She loves to read, so this is perfect for her and will get her extra excited about the books.

Photo: elvissa

2. Museums

At least one of our local museums is offering free admission on Mondays throughout the summer. I need to check with some of the other museums in the area to see if they have a similar offer, but have heard this is not uncommon. A visit to a museum is great for a) getting the kids out of the house, b) expanding their minds, and c) providing conversational topics.

Photo: aarongilson

3. Summer Day Camps

Luckily, baby girl’s preschool is hosting a summer day camp full of activities, weekly field trips, and a review of the pre-K curriculum they just completed. We’ve enrolled her for 5 weeks of camp this summer, though the weeks are spread out. Our local YMCA is also hosting a summer day camp with field trips, as well, so that may be something you can look into.

Photo: Richard Styles

4. Free Bowling or Other Recreational Activities

You may have already heard that AMF is offering two free games of bowling per day for kids 16 and under at over 200 locations in the US. I plan to take advantage of this offer a few times throughout the summer, though baby girl hasn’t quite mastered the art of bowling. She’ll still have fun, regardless, plus it’s an indoor activity – something that’s super important here in Orlando.

Last year, I also heard that some of the movie theaters had certain days of the week where they had free movies for the kids. That’s something else that would be fun and is also indoors.

Photo: Paul Sapiano

5. Swim Lessons

Believe it or not, our girl doesn’t yet know how to swim. This summer, we plan to fix that and have enrolled her in swimming lessons at our YMCA. Depending on how she does her first two weeks, we’ll see if we enroll her in further lessons.

The weeks that we have none of the above activities planned, such as this first week off from school, we are keeping her busy with continuing to write in her pre-K journal, reading, visits to abuela’s house, workbooks, and of course, playing with the various toys she owns. It’s sure to be a fast summer and before we know it, we’ll be preparing for the first day of Kindergarten.

How do you plan to keep your kids busy this summer?

*This giveaway has closed. Congratulations to the winners!*

My husband has always been into video games. I have too. I can still remember saving up my own money when I was 8 or 9 and going to the store to buy my first Nintendo system – the first one out that came with the duck hunting game and gun. Remember that? It’s no surprise, then, that my husband and I enjoy playing video games together and that this too has become a favorite family activity with our daughter.

However, there’s not that many games available that both entertain and are easy enough for her almost-five-year-old self to play. We end up helping her a lot when she plays games, even those that are supposedly for her age level. Which is why I was excited when I learned of the Sesame Street video games while I was at the Blogalicious 2010 conference. You’ve got Sesame Street characters like Cookie Monster and Elmo, educational games, and even a remote cover (or special pen for the DS version) to help children with their game play.

Our family received Cookie’s Counting Carnival for the Wii system to try out. Right away, our daughter was excited to play the game and couldn’t wait to put the Cookie Monster cover on the remote! I have to admit, I was just as excited and the fact that she was so engaged with the character and idea of it, automatically made me engaged as well. She was able to play the game by herself without much help at all. The mini-games included were appropriate for her age and of course, Cookie Monster’s guidance made the experience fun for her. By the way, have you ever seen Cookie Monster on Sesame Street’s Twitter? You get hilarious tweets from Cookie himself, like this one!

Anyway, it’s really no surprise that she enjoyed the game and as parents, my husband and I were glad that she was reinforcing many skills from preschool through a fun game experience. As adults, though, that play a variety of video games, it was hard not to notice a few things about the game that we wish were improved upon:

The synching of the voices to the mouth movement was off. See the video below for an example.

The remote cover actually made it a little harder to play for her. I think it was because it didn’t exactly fit the Wii remote, so it kept sliding around as she played. That may just have been our remote and/or cover; I’m not sure if all are the same.

The reaction time from pressing a button on the remote and the game recognizing your choice/move was also a bit off at times. This made for very slight frustration on her part as she knew she had the right answer and the game didn’t recognize it!

Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival Video Game for the Wii from Melanie Edwards on Vimeo.

Like I said, those are minor details that she didn’t notice while playing the game, but that we did since we’re into video game playing. None of that made for a bad experience in playing the game and each was easily resolved by ignoring it, removing the cover, and using it as a life lesson of “Sometimes things aren’t fair.” Luckily, our baby girl is strong and adjusts quickly, so she was not phased.

All that being said, how about you give the games a try yourself and see how your kids like them? The Sesame Street folks have provided one each of Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure for the Nintendo DS and Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival for the Nintendo DS. That means, that two ModernMami.com readers will win! Here are the descriptions for each game, as well as a video trailer with more information:

In Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure, kids head to the Zoo with Elmo, Zoe and their animal friends, as they explore fun games including letter identification, rhyming, letter sounds and color and shape identification. Kids can also explore fun Zoo habitats including the Aquarium, Savanna, Jungle, Wetlands and the Arctic.

In Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival, kids join Cookie Monster and Big Bird at a fun-filled carnival, through gameplay steeped in math skills that include number identification, counting, shapes and pattern recognition. Kids journey through the game in the many areas of the carnival such as The Grandstand, Midway, Petting Zoo, Food Court and the Arcade.

Mommy, you know there are bras for little girls too?

Well, not for little girls like you, but older little girls, yeah.

Like for 5 year olds? (Mind you, she turns 5 next month and apparently the world is going to drastically change when she’s 5 – she’ll officially be a big girl that can do any.thing. So she thinks.)

No, not for 5 year olds. Older girls. Like 10 maybe.

Nuh uh! [classmate's name] had a bra on when she was 3!

Are you sure it was a bra sweetie? Maybe it was an undershirt, like the ones you sometimes wear.

Noooo. It was a bra.

How do you know it was a bra? Did you see it?

Yes, she showed it to me.

Well, baby, even if she did, you’re not going to wear a bra until you need to – when you start growing breasts. That’s when mommy started wearing a bra.

Awww…I wish I could wear a bra.

Baby girl, don’t rush it. Enjoy being a 5 year old and not having to worry about that. When the time comes, you’ll wear a bra. Your body knows when it’s supposed to grow and when things are supposed to happen. Don’t rush things, ok?

Ok, mommy.

So went our conversation a few mornings ago. I’m not sure if her classmate really did have a bra on or not – I would hope not, since there’s no reason – but, somehow my not-even 5-year-old got the idea in her head that she needed a bra. I know she sees them in the stores too as we shop for her clothes and nowadays they look really pretty. I cringe every time I see a padded beginner’s bra. Why does a 10 year old just starting to develop and wear a bra need padding again? Aside from the padding, the bras in the little girls’ section are definitely much prettier than the ones around when I went through the ritual of picking my first bra. I definitely get why they are enticing for my girl.

Still, I can’t help but think of what else is coming my way. Did I ask my mother such questions at such a young age? What other questions will I have to answer within the next year and especially when she begins kindergarten?

I am not shying away from such conversations, but it would be helpful if I could peek into her little brain and know ahead of time so that I can prepare myself. It would also help if she waited until after I’ve had breakfast and fully woken up before she springs such heavy conversation on me.

This post is part of a paid campaign.

My baby girl started Prekindergarten this past Monday. Here in Florida they actually call it Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK), and the state funds the program. So, if you properly enroll your child with the state, various local child care centers will provide VPK free of charge 3 hours a day, five days a week. But, even though the state funds the program, I found myself receiving a school supply list from her preschool and having to purchase school supplies. We didn’t mind at all, and of course, it was very exciting for her to get her school supplies and take them to school. After all, starting next year when she starts Kindergarten, I’ll be buying school supplies every year thereafter – so this was good training.

Still, it reminded me of how underfunded the general school system is. Here in Florida, there have been many budget cuts for the Education industry, some that even recently affected the program where just eight months ago I was working full-time. The program no longer exists. I also know that most teachers purchase school supplies for their classrooms and students out of their own pocket. I know this because my mother-in-law is an elementary school teacher in South Florida and she is constantly looking for items at stores for “her kids” and her classroom. And, I think that’s how most teachers feel too – their students are “their kids” and they wholeheartedly embrace their role of educating those kids.

A major way that schools are affected by budget cuts are through critical enrichment programs such as music, arts, and sports. Sadly, many schools have had to cut back on or eliminate such programs. This year, Clorox wishes to help schools by awarding four grants, totaling $110,000, to help fund school programs that will brighten and enrich the lives of kids. Through the Power A Bright Future grant program, Clorox is seeking nominations for schools to win a $50,000 grand-prize grant or one of three $20,000 grants. All you have to do, is visit the Clorox site from August 12 to September 27, 2010 and submit a photo and information about the program in the appropriate category for your idea: Learn, Play or Create. For more information, official rules and to nominate a school program, visit Clorox.

Additional Ways To Help Your School and Children

I’m sure this is stuff we all already know, but as a reminder, taking several easy steps can help prevent the spread of germs:

Sing and Scrub: Wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice).

Do the Elbow Cough: Cough and sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands to help prevent the spread of germs by touch.

Disinfect Hot Spots: School staff and adults should routinely clean areas that people touch often, like desktops, remote controls and light switches.

In addition to nominating a school, there’s also plenty that can be done to support teachers in keeping his or her classroom clean and ready to inspire students. Consider bringing teachers hand sanitizer or canisters of Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to help make clean-up easier. Similar to school supplies, many teachers also provide cleaning supplies at their own expense.

Today I found myself home with my baby girl but also needing to clean. She didn’t go to preschool today, but I knew that I couldn’t let her being home get in the way of cleaning. This is a busy and short week for me due to the upcoming trip to Blissdom, so it is important that I stay on track.

So, I asked her to help me clean. This way we’d be doing it together and she’d feel involved. Plus, it helps her learn there are things to take care of around the house and that it’s good for all to pitch in as a family.

Obviously, young children have limitations when it comes to cleaning and helping around the house. What chores are preschool friendly, then?

Fold clothes: You can ask your preschooler to fold his/her clothes or even some towels. Since their clothes are so tiny anyway, they’re perfect for little hands to fold. My girl is also able to fold small towels, like kitchen towels. And, it doesn’t matter how they’re folded. I mean, really, if her shirts aren’t perfectly folded and lined up, life will go on.

Sweep: She may not be able to sweep the entire kitchen, but if she can sweep up a smaller area while I do something else, it helps. This works especially well if you use a swiffer, since all they have to do is push the stick up and down.

Clean bathroom sink: The first time I saw my daughter cleaning the sink in her classroom, I was amazed. “What are you doing?” I asked her. “Cleaning the sink! It helps my teacher.” I had no idea she knew how to do that! Now, she can run a sponge or rag around her bathroom sink while I clean the toilet.

Wash dishes: This started at my mom’s house. My daughter decided to ask her abuela if she could help her wash the dishes. So, my mom brought a stool by the sink, gave her a sponge and a bowl of soapy water, and said have at it. Since then, she’s done it a couple of times at our house too. Of course, we don’t give her the extra greasy or messy dishes, but she can safely wash a few cups and small plates.

Clean tables: My daughter’s been doing this since she was about two years old (maybe even earlier). It’s the easiest thing for her to do; she just has to swipe a paper towel over the table after I’ve sprayed it with some child-safe cleaner.

I’m sure there are many more household tasks and chores you can find that your preschooler can help with. If they’re anything like my daughter, they’ll love being able to help out. Just this morning she said that helping me clean was her “favorite thing to do in the house.” Now, mind you, her “favorite thing” to do changes from hour to hour, but still, for her to say it means she really does enjoy helping.

What chores have you found your kids can help with around the house?

“Brian’s funny.”

“Oh yea?”

“Yea, I like him.”

“Do you?”

“Uh hmm. He’s my boy-friend.”

“Your what?”

“My bo-y-friend.”

“Is he? And why do you say that?”

“He was at the playground. And I asked him if he wanted to hold my hand. And heeee saaaaid YES!”

“So that’s why he’s your boyfriend?”

“Uh huh.”

************************************************************

Little Cesar is always in time out. Every other day when I walk in to drop off my daughter, there he is at the front of their classroom, sitting by himself at the table. He’s adorable with his little chubby cheeks. Even in time out. And I feel bad for him.

This is the same kid that lied on my daughter’s second day of preschool and said she had been bad. He always talks to me or my husband. You can tell he just wants to talk to someone.

On this particular day, little Cesar looked up at me from his time out chair and said, “[something I didn't understand]…Brian’s girlfriend.”

“Who’s Brian’s girlfriend?”

At this point, my daughter came up to me and showed me something, so little Cesar sat for a second thinking.

Then he said, “Her! She’s Brian’s girlfriend!!”

And then I hear “Yeeeee-aaaaa!” from the corner and see little Ms. Megan (who’s sitting on the potty bench) is the one being little Cesar’s back-up homegirl.

Seriously? The fact that my daughter thinks she’s Brian’s girlfriend is a known fact amongst the other little boys and girls??!!

What in the world is going on at this preschool?

If this is the crap I have to deal with at THREE (almost four), I fear greatly for the teenage years.

In fact, I think I’m gonna just lock her up soon.

*All names have been changed cause I don’t want their mommies to beat me up if they ever find this blog.*

My daughter is 3. THREE!!! She does not need to know about Hannah Montana.

So, why does everyone and their mom think that it’s prime time my daughter be introduced to her?

Is this not a TV show for tween/teenage girls? I’ve seen it a couple of times and it’s definitely geared for girls 10 and up in my opinion. Lots of boy talk and jokes that are obviously meant for teenagers (and parents in some cases). And is there kissing? Not sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

So why oh why does my three year old need to even know that name?

She doesn’t.

Stop trying to give my three year old a Hannah Montana sticker. Or underwear. Or toy.

And stop asking me if she watches the show! You’ll get a quick, short, and loud NO! In fact, I might even turn it around on you and ask YOU why YOUR preschooler watches the show.

WHY INDEED???

I can’t imagine why little girls are introduced to make-up, nail polish, or such TV shows at such a young age, and then folks wonder why they want to act, dress, and look the same way when they are just a few years older. Then it becomes a problem?

I know I cannot keep my daughter away from Hannah Montana forever, or whomever it might be in a few years. It’s all over the place and it will be impossible to shield her. Nor do I want to “shield” her necessarily. I’d rather teach her than hide it from her.

But, for now…when she’s only three and I CAN control what she watches, what she wears, and who she listens to…believe me, I’m shielding her.

Hannah Montana will not be in our house. Or any of her similarly-acting sisters. Not for the next few years.

And, I’m about to throw away that stupid sticker she got from the urgent clinic.

I was planning on posting a review and contest today. That was the plan at least.

But, something happened at the preschool yesterday. As I write this, I still don’t know what exactly. We’ll be trying to find out this morning.

Here’s what I do know:

my child has two scratches on her stomach and the area was still red at bath-time

she says the teacher pushed her

this was only her second day there

Scratches, cuts, bruises, and such happen. I know this. But, a scratch on her stomach doesn’t just happen from falling on the playground. And, I should have gotten a report about it when I picked her up.

Granted…I’m a mess. I already had some reservations about preschool.

This doesn’t help.

And I can’t help but think, “I want to drop everything and be home with her so I can protect her.” Of course, that would mean we’d live in our car or something.

I don’t even know what else to say. Forgive the crappy post.

My heart is just in pieces right now.

******************Updated 8/2/09******************

I’ve gotten a lot of questions and comments wondering how everything turned out. I even got a complaint that I left you all hanging and didn’t post a follow-up. My apologies.

We talked with the school, teachers, assistant director, etc. They all helped try to figure out what happened and how the scratches came about. Unfortunately, just like us, they didn’t know either. But, they did try to help and they seemed genuine.

In the end, my baby girl didn’t seem sad or scared about being there. Even the next day after the incident, she was fine to stay at school and seemed happy when I picked her up.

So, for now, we’re all ok. Obviously, we’ve got an extra eye on her and just the mere fact that we brought the incident up shows the school that we’re aware of her.

Thank you ALL for your concerns.

Today my baby girl takes a big step towards not being a baby girl. It’s her first day of preschool.

And, while some of you might have had your kids in preschool or day-care since they were only a few months old (or even a few weeks old), this is her very first time in 3 1/2 years.

It’s a big deal for us and a big change.

For the past 3 1/2 years, she’s hasn’t just been babysat. She’s been lovingly cared for and attended to by my mother. While having family be her caregiver did have some downsides, overall it was the greatest care I could have ever hoped for. She was in the company of family and I knew she was safe. I knew she was hugged, and fed properly, and loved. Really loved.

Now, she’s starting preschool. I know it’s a good thing. I do. She’ll have the opportunity to interact with other kids her age, make friends, and be stimulated in ways we could not provide at home. Lots of fun will be had and she’ll learn a lot.

I know.

But, I can’t help but think of all the other little things that she’ll also experience. Things like, outside influences and picking up behavior or language that we do not condone. I also can’t help but wonder if she’ll be safe.

Will she tell me if something bad happens? Will she tell me if someone doesn’t treat her right? Will they make sure she eats properly?

I feel like I’m on a balance board. On one end, there are so many things to be excited about. Yet, on the other end, there are so many things to worry about at the same time.

Not sure that feeling will ever go away.
